Christian Alexander Matenaers

Marketing director working at the intersection of commercial strategy, data and execution, with a persistent tendency to over-engineer useful things and also many completely useless ones.

About

Please note that this site and its content are mainly for my own amusement.

My name is Chris Matenaers. I am a British/German living just outside of London, working in the digital industry, where I have spent most of my career around digital marketing, data, systems, commercial strategy, and the occasional need to explain to sensible people why something highly technical was in fact necessary.

Professionally, I enjoy building things that are both commercially useful and structurally unfair in the best possible sense: automation that saves effort, measurement that improves decisions, and systems that scale better than the team chart suggests they should. I currently work for a Grainger subsidiary in the UK.

This page is intentionally simple. It replaces a WordPress site because, on balance, a static HTML file feels more honest, cheaper to host, harder to break, and far less likely to demand attention when I would rather be doing something else.

Interests outside work

  • Scuba diving and travelling
  • Coding and developing applications that will almost certainly remain unfinished
  • Watching films of questionable quality
  • Cooking, eating good food, and pretending those are separate hobbies
  • Board games and computer games
  • Occasional contributions to open source projects

Other pursuits

  • Politics, public affairs, and the broader state of things
  • Reading, tinkering, and following vaguely scholarly interests
  • General curiosity about systems, institutions, technology, and why people build them badly

A slightly more useful summary

Over the years I have worked across e-commerce, publishing, global digital platforms, and high-growth businesses. My background is a mixture of leadership, analytics, performance marketing, and technical implementation. In plain English: I like strategy, but I also like knowing how the machinery actually works.

That tends to mean work around growth systems, measurement, automation, experimentation, personalisation, pricing, and the overlap between commercial ambition and practical execution. I am particularly interested in building lean, well-instrumented systems that create disproportionate impact without requiring endless layers of process or headcount.

Outside work, I retain a healthy interest in side projects, many of which begin with entirely reasonable intentions and end with a repository, a half-working prototype, and a note to revisit it later. This is apparently how some people relax.

Contact

This site is intentionally minimal, so there is no elaborate contact form, newsletter, funnel, lead magnet, or other mechanism pretending not to be marketing.
